We live in the ephemeral era. As Zygmunt Bauman explained in his latest books, the globalization, among other things, had made all liquid and fragile. We are not in the same job until retirement, maybe we don’t have the same couple all of our life, and probably we are not going to live in the same house forever.
The exhibition Does Permanence Matter? talks about this question from the perspective of ephemeral urbanism. Architecture and structures that are quickly erected and dismantled are the protagonists of this project. Oktoberfest in Munich, Burning Man Festival in Nevada, or the Kumbh Mela festival in India, are some of the examples of these constructions.
Based on a study made by Rahul Mehrotra (Graduate School of Design, Harvard University) and Felipe Vera (Centro de Ecologia Paisaje y Urbanismo, Santiago), the exhibition shows a phenomenon around the world.
*You can visit the exhibition Does Permanence Matter until 18th of March 2018. On Sundays, the entry fee is only 1 €. More information at Pinakothek der Moderne.
