Women’s Filmweek Bimovie 25

JT LeRoy Kino Neues Maxim

Feminism is power and the ability to change the world. The film festival Bimovie 25 explore some films about women, gender, no gender, feminism, feminity, but most of all, about diversity. If our world were all the same, life on earth will be so boring. So, let’s celebrate that we are all different with films like JT Leroy (Thursday 7 at 7 pm and Sunday 10 at 9 pm), a story about identity and what implies to be famous with Laura Dern and Kirsten Stewart as the protagonists.

Shooting the Mafia (Thursday 7 at 9 pm, and Monday 11 at 9 pm) is a documentary about the brave journalist, Letizia Battaglia, a pioner who was shooting pictures of the Sicily’s Mafia in the 70s.

Another interesting piece is the Berlinale awarded satirical film God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya (Friday 8 at 7 pm with the presence of the director, and Wednesday 13 at 9 pm), about rituals, traditions and contradictions in Macedonia.

School of Seduction (Friday 8 at 9 pm and Tuesday 12 at 7 pm) is a documentary about beauty and sexism in Russia, telling three different stories of women who attend classes to be the perfect wife and marry rich men.

Another interesting documentary is The Rest I Make Up (Sunday 10 at 5 pm and Wednesday 13 at 7 pm) about the Off-Off-Broadway playwright María Irene Fornés and her incredible imagination. As she now has Alzheimer, and has been a good friend of the director, the film digs deep into memories and friendship over the years.

We mourned the loss of Agnès Varda this year, a great independent director and storyteller. Varda par Agnès  (Sunday 10 at 3 pm) was her last film, an autobiographical documentary full of anecdotes and memories.

The festival is full of other interesting stories, as well as a session of short films from Asia. From the 7th to the 13th of November, the film festival will be celebrated at the cinema Neues Maxim. From the 22th to the 24th of November, the festival will offer a retrospective of their archives from 1991 to 2019 screening different films at Werkstattkino.

All the films mentioned in this post are shown in English, whether in Original Version with German or English subtitles. You can find prices and directions here.
