Politik im Freien Theater
November 1 @ 7:30 pm - November 11 @ 10:00 pm€5 – €80
Art and politics always had a close relationship. The festival Politik im Freien Theater is an initiative of Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung taking place every three years in a German city in cooperation with a city or state theater and an actor of the independent scene. This time, the city that hosts this festival is Munich with Münchner Kammerspiele and Spielmotor München e.V. / SPIELART Festival as the main actors.
The motto of this edition is “Reich” (rich) to point out the social differences between poor and rich in aspects like economics or culture. Stories about refugees, post-colonialism, wealthy countries and other reflexive topics conform the extense program of this theater festival.
The piece that opens the festival on 1st of November is Paradise Now (1968 – 2018) (in English and German). It talks about the 1968 revolt and its impact nowadays through the eyes of some teenagers who express their desperation, but also their hopes.
Tender Provocations of Hope and Fear (in English and German) xposes different issues of our time to look at with fear like wars, climate change, the growing of the radical right, etc. Even though that’s scary, the directors of the play Jessica Huber and James Leadbitter opt for the culture of hope.
Another interesting production is the performative experiment Enjoy Racism (in English) that invites the audience to get out of their comfort zone and confront with their own privileges.
These and other plays can be watched from the 1st to the 11th of November in different theaters across Munich. In addition, it will be lectures, film, workshops, a concert, and other activities.
