Sabine Glenz Phasen. Machen
June 12 @ 8:30 pm - June 13 @ 11:30 pm€15
Sabine Glenz takes the compositional technique of Phasing in music, created by Steve Reich in the mid-1960s, as the initial point of her choreography. This principle is inspired by the phase shift that results when two tape loops with the identical musical material are played on different devices. Transferring this to instruments results in a subtle rhythmic shift of the initial unison sound, caused by imperceptible tempo difference until all instruments reach the same phase again.
Glenz uses the “Marimba Phase” (1967), “Pendulum Music” (1968) and “Drumming” (1970/71) Reich’s works and together with three contemporary dancers and four drummers of the Munich Philarmonic work out different phases in the piece Phasen Machen: In seemingly loose set pieces, dance and music intermingle or are decoupled from each other. The relationship between music and dance is a form of expression besides the structure of the movements or the notes. The rhythm flows naturally, in a poetic way full of fragile moments, but also of powerful ones. A unique performance!
